A Matter of Convenience
I have to admit that I have always looked at the convenience foods in supermarkets and wondered who on earth buys them. By convenience foods I mean things like ready sliced carrots and chilled mashed potato.
Lately though, I’ve found or two of them sneaking into my trolley. Not, I hasten to add, sliced carrots or mushrooms or even sliced onions (although I can see to some extent why someone would buy those. As a contact lens wearer, slicing onions doesn’t bother me, but on the rare occasions I slice onions whilst wearing glasses, I’m always surprised by how much it makes my eyes sting. Not enough to make me buy ready sliced onions though). I certainly don’t buy chilled mash. But last week I did buy some pre-prepared veg. *whispers* I bought diced swede. There, I said it.
I like swede. I wanted swede in the stew I was going to make. It would have cost me half as much to buy a whole swede and take it home and dice it myself. But I can’t. I have arthritis in the metacarpal, at the base of my thumb, and swede is one thing that I cannot tackle. So I bought ready diced swede and found myself justifying it to myself (and now you).
But that doesn’t explain the grated cheese that made its way into my trolley and has been doing for some time now. I do grate cheese at home. I’ve only ever bought grated mozzarella because I use a lot of it when I make a pasta bake and it’s so much easier to not have to grate as I go. And besides, our supermarket only sells grated or the soft kind, in water. I’ve never bought grated cheddar, for instance. Except that I did, last week. Hubby wanted quesadillas, and I really didn’t fancy grating all that cheese, having made the tortilla from scratch. I felt guilty. I still do.
But now I have made my confession. I have justified my purchases, the spending of extra money to save a little time. And I make you a promise. I will never buy chilled mash. Or sliced mushrooms.
So, come on, ‘fess up. What convenience foods have you been guilty of buying, and why?
