100 Happy Days – Day 77

chandrasidWhilst I was at the studio over the weekend, I took the opportunity to get a copy of a new book we have out. During a challenge earlier in the year, I won a £75 voucher to spend whilst I was at conference, so I was pleased to be able to get Chandra’s Magic Light* as part of that prize. It’s the story of a girl named Chandra who lives in Nepal. She knows a solar lamp can light her family’s home without kerosene and save them money, and she knows it will help her brother’s breathing, but how can she earn enough money to pay for one?

On Tuesday, I finally found time to sit down and read it with the children. It’s the mark of a great book when it can keep three children – aged eight, three and one – interested from the start right to the end. Bean loved the factual content of the story and will also spend a lot of time reading the end notes which tell him more about life in Nepal. He’s very interested in solar power too, so this story was always going to interest him and I can’t wait to make a pizza box solar oven with him, using the tutorial in the book. Plum loved the pictures, brightly coloured and detailed. She’s great at being able to pick out the emotion of a story from a picture. PK liked looking at the pictures, but mostly he liked hearing the story, the change of pace and tone, the facial expressions I used whilst reading. It’s a definite hit in this house!
