Available for Weddings, Bar Mitzvahs ….

Part of me wondered what I would do with myself when I gave up teaching. Of course, I’d taken on a franchise, so to some extent I already knew what I would be doing, but I wondered if that would fill my days or would I be bored?

Whilst looking through my diary yesterday morning to see when I could book an appointment in for a client, it occurred to me that I needn’t have worried. “Can I come on a Friday morning?” “Yes, the next Friday morning I have available is 7 October”. What???? Luckily, we managed to sort something out for next week. But that’s barmy! How did my Fridays get to be so busy?

Well, the answer is that between casting days and my volunteer work, I’m all booked up. I’m a breastfeeding peer supporter, as you may already know, but the bulk of my work in this role is on a Monday morning, when I help out at a breastfeeding group. Recently though, I was asked if I could go along to another group on a Friday morning to talk to their new group of peer supporters. The cohort I trained with have been rolling out a new initiative in our area and we’ve been covering way beyond our own area whilst other areas get up and running. Well, one area is ready to get going, and I’ve been asked to go along and explain what we do and how it works. I’m looking forward to it, because I’ve found being involved in this inititive to be really rewarding, and I hope the new supporters will find it equally so.

Yesterday, I got a text from the man who co-ordinates the peer supporters, asking if I could go along to another group one Friday. The mums at this group wanted to know more about baby-led weaning, and I was suggested as someone who might be able to go and talk to them about it. I said I’d love to, but I wasn’t free until the end of the month. “Can we book you for that day please?” Great!

Now, I have to admit, if you asked me a year ago if I imagined myself going to groups to tlak about breastfeeding, breastfeeding support and baby led weaning, the answer would have been a resounding “No!”. My areas of expertise lay elsewhere. Since giving up teaching though, I’ve realised that I’ve built up a lot of knowledge and skills that I’ve not had the time or opportunity to put to use before. It appears I do still have a use!

So, if you want to know anything about peer supporting, the 72 hour call iniative, baby led weaning, cloth nappies, writing press releases or setting up and maintaining a blog, I’m available for weddings, baptisms, Bar Mitzvahs ….

just not on a Friday morning 😉
